The Winnipeg Free Press recently featured coverage of the Small Business & Retail Crime Prevention Conference hosted by the Sargent Business Community (SBC). The article brings important attention to a reality many of our members know all too well. Crime is increasing, and small businesses in the West End are feeling the effects. Theft, vandalism, and repeated property damage are becoming more frequent, and many business owners are struggling to keep up with the financial and emotional toll.
We organized this conference because we knew that these concerns could no longer be ignored. The event provided a space for local business owners to speak candidly about the challenges they face every day. It also brought together key voices from law enforcement, city departments, and community safety organizations to share ideas and explore practical responses.
Throughout the day, it became clear that these issues are deeply interconnected. Participants raised concerns about response times, the justice system, and gaps in mental health and social supports. At the same time, many spoke about the need for stronger community networks, better communication, and a more coordinated approach to crime prevention.
At SBC, we are proud to have led this initiative. Our role is to amplify the voices of West End businesses, advocate for meaningful action, and help build partnerships that lead to real change. We are committed to continuing this work and to supporting our members as we push for a safer, more resilient local business environment.
We thank all who attended the conference and shared their experiences and ideas. We encourage everyone to read the article and stay engaged as we move forward together.
