As a business community, we know that repeat property crime and the trafficking of stolen goods directly hurt our bottom line and create safety concerns. We have an important update from the Winnipeg Police Service that directly impacts our neighbourhood.
The WPS Property Crime Unit has arrested 29-year-old Dut Akeen AKEN following an investigation into a string of shoplifting incidents across the city between October 13 and November 11, 2025. The suspect is alleged to have stolen close to $2000 worth of merchandise, mainly electronics and toys, from various retail stores.
The critical detail for our community is the trafficking operation: the investigation revealed that on November 11, the suspect sold this stolen merchandise to a specialty store located right here, in the 500 block of Sargent Avenue.
This arrest on November 21 is a necessary step against the kind of activity that fuels cycles of theft. AKEN has been charged with:
- Theft Under $5000 (x 4)
- Trafficking in Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000
- Fail to Comply with Probation Order
Thank you to the WPS for prioritizing these repeat offenders and shutting down a pipeline for stolen goods that was operating in our area.
Let’s stay vigilant: We encourage all businesses on Sargent Avenue to remain cautious about purchasing second-hand items and to report any suspicious activity immediately. Together, we keep our community safe.
