Addressing the Headlines: What the Recent Safety Study Means for Sargent Avenue

Seeing headlines like this land on national news is always tough, especially when you live, work, or run a business right here on Sargent Avenue.

A recent poll ranked Winnipeg at the bottom when it comes to how safe people feel across Canada. It is easy to look at those numbers and feel frustrated, but a national survey showing people’s perceptions rarely tells the whole story of what is actually happening on our street every day.

We know our neighborhood has real challenges, and nobody here is trying to pretend otherwise.

But we also see the incredible resilience, hard work, and care that our local business owners and residents put into Sargent Avenue every single day. The headlines focus on the negative, but they miss the vibrant cultures, the amazing food, the friendly faces, and the strong sense of neighbor helping neighbor that truly makes this area special.

We cannot control national polls, but we can control how we show up for our community.

A busy street is a safe street, and the best way we can uplift Sargent Avenue is by standing together. We encourage everyone to keep supporting our local shops, checking in on your neighbors, and staying active in the community.

When we keep showing up for each other, we build the welcoming, vibrant street we all want to see.
