Mayor Scott Gillingham has expressed support for the federal government’s upcoming bail reform bill, which targets violent and repeat offenders, including those involved in violent auto thefts, human trafficking, and “organized retail theft.”
The proposed law will introduce a “reverse onus” for major crimes, placing the burden on the accused to demonstrate why they should be released on bail.
While the Mayor praises the move as a needed response to public safety, experts and business owners in the article also stress the importance of addressing the root causes of crime, such as addiction, alongside legislative change.
