Incident Update: Arrest Made Following Unprovoked Assaults in Unicity Area

The Sargent Business Community is sharing an update regarding a series of disturbing incidents that took place on February 21, 2026, in the Unicity neighborhood.

According to the Winnipeg Police Service, a 27-year-old male was arrested after a string of unprovoked attacks, including an assault on a transit passenger and a violent attack on a school-aged child inside a retail store on Portage Avenue. We are relieved to hear that the child is in stable condition and that a suspect is now in custody facing charges of Aggravated Assault, Assault, and Theft.

Incidents like these are a stark reminder of why community vigilance is so vital. We want to commend the transit operator, the brave father who intervened, and the local business staff who acted quickly to contact the police.

The following is the post from the Winnipeg Police Service Facebook page:

“Transit bus assault and retail store assault of school-aged child leads to arrest of 27-year-old man: C26-41427
On February 21, 2026, at 12:30 p.m., West District General Patrol officers arrested 27-year-old Chase Julian HARRISON regarding his involvement is several assaults in the Unicity neighbourhood.
At 11:45 a.m., the suspect was a passenger on a parked transit bus in the 3600 block of Portage Avenue when, unprovoked, he approached and physically assaulted a 66-year-old man on board. The passenger did not suffer any injuries, and the transit operator directed the suspect off the bus.
Shortly after, the suspect entered a retail store in the same block, selected a baseball bat, and assaulted a school-aged child in the upper body, knocking the child to the ground. The suspect continued to assault the child while he lay on the ground. The child’s father intervened and fought off the suspect before the suspect fled from the store. The child was transported to hospital in stable condition and treated for his injuries. Store staff contacted police.
At 12:09 p.m., the suspect made his way to a collision repair centre in the 3500 block of Portage Avenue where he stole a customer’s vehicle keys. Centre staff contacted police, who attended quickly and arrested him without further incident.
HARRISON and the victims are previously unknown to one another.
HARRISON is charged with Aggravated Assault, Assault, and Theft Under $5,000. He was detained in custody.”
