The recent community gathering near Denson and Riddle highlighted serious and growing safety concerns surrounding the encampment along Omand’s Creek. When more than 50 local residents show up to express frustration over criminal activity and sexual exploitation occurring right in their neighborhood, it is clear that current approaches are falling short.
This is very similar to our current situation in the West End of Winnipeg.
Community safety and compassion for unhoused individuals must go hand in hand, but neighborhood streets, parks, and residential areas cannot become places where families feel unsafe. When residents witness illegal activity and exploitation near their homes, immediate coordinated action from City Hall, law enforcement, and outreach agencies is essential.
Addressing complex issues like encampments requires a multi-faceted strategy. We need dedicated police resources to curb criminal activity, targeted outreach to connect individuals with real housing and support services, and environmental crime prevention measures like improved lighting and public site maintenance.
Listening to impacted neighborhoods is a vital first step, but residents need to see tangible, lasting results. Local leaders, police, and community members must keep working together to restore safety, protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation, and ensure green spaces remain accessible and safe for everyone.
Thank you to every resident who came out to speak up for their community. Continuing to document concerns, report criminal activity, and stay engaged with neighborhood safety initiatives ensures our area receives the attention and resources it urgently requires.
