Retail Business Outlook 2025-2026: Finding Light at the End of the Tunnel

The year 2025 brought some of the highest crime rates Manitoba retailers have ever seen. From shoplifting and petty theft to vandalism and physical assaults, it has been an uphill battle for businesses in the West End, Central, and the suburbs alike. In the early months of 2025, the situation in many parts of the city was so dire that many felt unsafe simply going to work, let alone shopping or dining out.

However, through tireless advocacy and collaboration with local community groups, the justice system, the provincial government, and the police, we have seen a tangible difference over the last few months. While the holiday season is typically a peak time for criminal activity, we are finally seeing a shift in the trend.

When we were heading into September, many business owners, myself included, were deeply worried based on the trends from earlier in the year. But because the Winnipeg Police Service and members of the government listened to our concerns and took action, we are finally seeing crime rates drop. In my own business this December, I have seen a 50% decrease in crime over recent weeks. Seeing several major shoplifters brought to justice is not just a win for one shop, it is a positive sign for our collective future.

We recognize that a problem this size has no “quick fix,” but there is finally light at the end of the tunnel. As a business activist, I have been heartened by the willingness of our government officials and our Chief of Police to listen, show up, and implement changes that protect our livelihoods.

The road ahead will be difficult, but working together makes the difference. Whether that means engaging with your local business community or simply getting to know your neighbors, connection is our best defense. I’ve found that giving back as a business owner changes how we are perceived in our neighborhoods; a little kindness goes a long way, even when we are facing the pressure of rising costs and thin margins.

Regardless of the challenges we face, we are all Canadians. Standing together makes us stronger and ensures a better community for the next generation. As we move into 2026, let’s look forward with the goal of making our businesses stand out. Let’s make 2026 the year we solidify our work with the community, police, and government to ensure our streets are safe for owners, employees, and patrons alike.

If you are a business owner with questions, or if you want to step up and help lead change in your community, I am only an email away. I am always willing to do what I can to make our city stronger.

Have a safe and happy New Year
