Home Intrusions, Police Response Times, and the Urgent Need for Community Safety

A recent incident in our community serves as a disturbing reminder of the safety vulnerabilities local families are facing. An unknown individual walked into a resident’s home around 7 AM and went to sleep on the couch, only discovered when one of the children realized he was a stranger. While the family was fortunately able to guide him out safely without physical harm, what followed is equally concerning: it took nearly 24 hours for police to arrive on the scene.

No family should ever experience a stranger entering their home, let alone have to wait an entire day for law enforcement to respond. Long response times for home intrusions and break-ins leave residents feeling unprotected and vulnerable in the very places they should feel safest. It highlights a critical systemic gap where emergency services are stretched too thin to address serious safety breaches in a timely manner.

Addressing these challenges requires a two-fold commitment from our city leaders. First, we need to ensure local emergency response resources are structured and funded to respond promptly when a home or family is compromised. Second, we must invest in practical, neighborhood-level prevention. That means encouraging practical residential security habits, building stronger neighborhood watch networks, and establishing direct channels between residents, local police divisions, and community safety teams.

Our thoughts are with the family who had to navigate this frightening situation. As a community, we must continue to advocate for faster response times, greater police accountability, and meaningful crime prevention measures that keep Winnipeg families safe in their own homes.

Original Facebook post from Sherbrooke Safety and Security Watch:

A few days ago around 7am we had someone walk into our house and eventually went to sleep on our couch. Until one of our kids realized it wasn’t someone that lives in our house. They were able to get him out of the house without incident. But it took almost 24hrs for police to arrive. We were able to get a good picture of the individual. So if anyone sees this man please call the police.
